HONOR X7 review: substance and top autonomy
Honor is now a reality in its own right and consolidated: the new line-up embraces all needs a little and I am sure it will be able to take the place of Huawei in the hearts of users. Waiting to try the Magic 4 Pro toppone, which we showed to fans a month ago, we received the new mid / base range X7 and X8, characterized by a modest technical data sheet but also by a competitive price and a rather sustained plethora of potentials. users (not only aunts and grandmothers, but also very young for example). Net, of course, of offers on "old" midrange, no-VAT offers (in many senses) and so on. This is just to anticipate the thousand thousand objections to higher-end products that are at the same price on eBay, Amazon and so on. So I know you were going to write and comment.
Unboxing
The equipment includes:
The phone
A 22.5W power supply
Type C cable
Cover
Pre-applied film on the screen
Aesthetics and materials
Despite the due proportions, given the important price difference, the aesthetics are borrowed from the Honor 50, except of course the materials which are plastic here and with the exception of the front which is obviously completely flat. The overall rendering is not out of place at all and is pleasant to see. We appreciated this choice and we believe that the use of less noble materials can be an advantage, taking into account those who will use the product, obviously not tech enthusiasts in the strict sense. The dimensions are not too small and the weight is close to 200g, also due to the 5000 mAh battery which (as we will see) is practically inexhaustible.
Battery and connectivity
It is an Honor, what to say? It takes good, takes (almost) everywhere, has a very good call quality and is comfortable in any situation. The Wi-Fi network is also very stable, not very fast but adequate. Bluetooth is also good, both with earphones and with a wearable connected specifically to test its reliability, Android auto is also doing well. The presence of the NFC chip is welcome and works as expected. Concreteness, reliability and substance in a product that was obviously born to make the telephone, doing it in the best way.
Battery life is certainly the best aspect of the Honor X7: even trying it, I was unable to download it at the end of the day without risking ruining my mental health forever. Some will expect numbers, but it is impossible to make a reliable projection. In the most stressful day, practically all in 4G, with many trips (train and bus), therefore intense use of GPS with Maps and Moovit, photos for tests, videos on Youtube, social networks, push mail and so on and so forth metta I arrived in the evening with a good 35% residual. Monstrous.
Display, vibration and audio
On the display the company has saved a bit: we have a traditional IPS HD + LCD but with a rather wide diagonal and the refresh at 90 Hz. Surely it is not the life panel and the brightness outdoors is just enough, but the colors are not they are evil (they can also be finely regulated) and the definition is acceptable. If you take into account the target audience of the product and the price range, it is by no means a tragedy. The vibration is traditional, we don't have a linear motor, but I don't think anyone who uses this product will notice. Mono audio with decent sound pressure.
Software and Performance
On board we find the Magic UI 4.2 based on Android 11 (March patch) and not the 5.0 with Android 12. Not being a smartphone designed for tech-addicted, we can certainly define a conservative choice of this kind as adequate, since we have on board a proven software that actually proved super stable even with my heavy use. It's not lightning (it doesn't pretend to be) but it's noticeably smoother than you might expect. The lags are sporadic and never too evident. The relationship between hardware and software seems so well balanced that it seems (at least in performance) an even more expensive product. The Snapdragon 680, which struggled a bit in other devices with more charged interfaces, here reacts in a dignified way, and at the same time with reasonable consumption. The Magic UI 4.2 without too many words is almost totally comparable to EMUI 11 in both appearance and functionality, thus also borrowing its merits and gaining total compatibility with Google services, which is anything but underestimating.
Photo and video
I hope no one decides to buy such a product for the camera, and then maybe harshly criticize it. The presence of rear cameras is obviously purely aesthetic, as often happens there are two fully exploitable cameras. We have a 48MP main and a 5MP ultrawide. The two 2MP cameras (macro and portrait) are negligible. The main one offers images that are more than usable in the daytime, useful for sharing on social networks and for exchanging images between friends, thanks also to several nice features also seen on other Honor devices and to the presence of AI functionality even in this price range for embellish the colors of the pictures. We always remember the target market of this smartphone, which is certainly not that of photography fans or all-round tech enthusiasts. The focus is average, you just have to be careful to shoot with a steady hand because the shutter speed is not very high. When the light becomes more complicated, the images inevitably deteriorate, although the night mode (see an example below) helps the overall rendering of the image. A camera, therefore, in line with expectations. The 5MP ultrawide is unfortunately a bit sacrificed and offers sufficient results only in bright light. Use it sparingly. The videos, due to the limitations of the SoC (apparently) stop at ** 30fps and are sufficient for the positioning of the device, no more and no less. But, all in all, they make themselves watched. Ultrawide also suffers a little in this area.
Front "service" camera, probably more suitable for simple video calls than for wonderful selfies. During the day, however, he takes the bread home, in the evening an already seen function intervenes that uses the screen to illuminate the scene and reduce the "suffering" of the front cam.
Price and conclusions
The list price is € 209.90, but already on day one on the official website it is possible to take it home with a € 20 discount. Very soon it will certainly be possible to find it just over € 150, but already in this way it is advisable to a very wide range of people who make a "normal" use of the smartphone. We enthusiasts represent a small slice of users, but the market is full of potential customers who are looking for simple products that are also reliable in every operation. This is the Honor X7 market, which does the phone very well, is fluid enough and also has some gems such as the NFC chip.
