The HONOR * GS PRO for a mountain excursion
Get ready for a field comparison between * GS PRO and MagicWatch 2 46mm
We were left with a nice review of the * GS PRO by the sea, the last sunny weekend of the summer. Today, however, I ventured into the high ground, on Morello Mountain, the mountain that overlooks Florence (Italy). It was an excellent opportunity to put the * GS PRO to the test and compare it with the MagicWatch 2 46mm.
So, if you are curious, press play immediately in the video below (link https://www.youtube.com/*?v=ZPCSbfkas4c ), you will find some info on the tests I did and the adventure I lived on this cold and crazy Saturday in early autumn.
Premise
I started three simultaneous workouts in parallel:
Excursion on the * GS PRO (left wrist) connected to Honor 9 with data connection, GPS and bluetooth turned on;
Excursion on the MagicWatch 2 46mm (right wrist) connected to Honor 9X with data connection, GPS and bluetooth turned on;
Hiking from the Sports Tracker app installed on Honor 9 (with left arm band).
The music was played through the Huawei Music app with the songs stored in the Honor 9 memory, on Honor Sport PRO Bluetooth Earphones. The various clips were shot with Honor 9X PRO in ** 30fps and edited with InShot directly on Honor 9X PRO, exporting the final video in **.
Feeling
On the wrist, the * GS PRO is not invasive, on the contrary, not being used to having something on the right wrist, I found the MagicWatch 2 46mm more weight. About weights, the * GS PRO Charcoal Black version weighs 77g while the MagicWatch 2 46mm Charcoal Black weighs 69g.
The edge of the * GS PRO is raised, with the bezel very embossed, compared to the MagicWatch 2 46mm which has a smooth and clean design: this gives both a more resistant and protective look to the screen, but can be annoying when swiping among the various menus. During training, you can scroll through the pages with the data using the lower key, but some features can only be reached by swiping with your finger on the display.
Despite the different attachment, both straps are comfortable and solid.
The display is well lit, suffers a little from direct light as in the case of the MagicWatch 2 46mm.
Measurements
We see in the table below the comparison between the data obtained from the * GS PRO and MagicWatch 2 46mm reported on Huawei Health and the data recorded by the Sport Tracker app (link on the web https://www.sports-tracker.com/workout/zane_88/ 5f6f68fcbe423a4d5c66cdf6).
It is immediately obvious how similar and close they are to each other, while there is more discrepancy with the measurements obtained with the Honor 9 GPS and reported on Sports Tracker. The difference in the steps between the * GS PRO and the MagicWatch 2 46mm may be due to the different movements of the arms: sometimes I clung to or held the smartphone.
Both the * GS PRO and the MagicWatch 2 46mm underestimate the actual height. But the * GS PRO, unlike the MagicWatch 2 46mm, has the possibility to set it. In fact, from the barometer menu (when we do not have a workout started) we can set the altitude: I therefore recommend you do the 0m if you are by the sea (I recommend, at the water's edge) or as soon as you find an indication on the street.
Unfortunately, Huawei Health does not report the maximum speed.
At the end of the workout I also made a measurement of the SpO2 oxygen saturation: identical for * GS PRO and Magic * 2 46mm; simultaneous measurement of beats is also aligned.
Top and flop
TOP:
The GPS of the * GS PRO locks the signal immediately, much faster than the MagicWatch 2 46mm which takes up to a couple of minutes.
Surely the sturdy construction that does not cause you to worry in the event of accidental bumps and does not require any protective film. So the keys well integrated into the case are certainly safer than in the MagicWatch 2 46mm.
The ability to calibrate the altimeter, even if it does not maintain calibration for a long time (I had calibrated it the weekend before on sea level).
As with the MagicWatch 2 46mm, the GS PRO also allows you to set training goals with various alerts and goals. Useful to see the improvements compared to a previous course or to the average held in previous workouts
FLOP:
In Excursion mode, I was unable to control the music while the workout was running.
I did not find the Route Back function in Excursion mode.
For these more extreme sports, I would have dedicated a training page to emergency calls.
I consumed 10% of the battery in 2.5h, so I would have reset it in 25h: a value that is equal to half the maximum declared with the use of GPS (48h).
To try again
I reserve the right to retry the music control and the Route Back because they are present in the walk and in the race outside.
The battery is in the second charge cycle, I guess it needs a few more cycles to settle under stress, because in basic use it is proving up to expectations.
So what?
HONOR has always accustomed us to careful research in style and design, so the * GS PRO wins from this point of view. In terms of autonomy we are on a par, but on paper the * GS PRO is favoured. Moreover, the * GS PRO instantly finds the GPS signal without unnecessary waiting at the beginning of the trails.
The MagicWatch 2 46mm wins the balance test with 8g less than the * GS PRO.
I would have given a few more points to the * GS PRO if only I had managed to activate (I repeat, I want to try it again) the Route Back: maybe in a less hidden screen it would be more intuitive? The feature is there but you can't see it.
