Introduction

HONOR Magic4 Pro is a complete smartphone from many points of view and some functions must be studied and understood. You have to make some attempts before understanding how some mechanisms work and it will also be useful to know the basics of photography and photo/video editing. This is because it is likely that at the first attempt you will not get the desired result, and not because of HONOR Magic4 Pro. I also had to initially extricate myself with the multiple settings but once you understand the mechanism you will have a smartphone in your hands that will make you feel like a professional. Don't give up, try and try again and you too will tame "The Power of Magic" of HONOR Magic4 Pro.

In addition to the lenses and sensors housed in the Eye of the Muse on the back of the HONOR Magic4 Pro, the graphics engine that manages the data * is at the heart of the video processing.

HONOR Magic4 Pro is equipped with the HONOR Magic-Log Movie Master and AI Film Effects software functions, and delivers cinematic-grade movies. HONOR Magic4 Pro offers the first 10-bit, 60fps (over 24fps and 30fps) 4K Log video recording, just like professional tools. The Log format allows users to improve the appearance of their videos by means of a dedicated color correction without loss of quality, with Cinematic 3D LUT * presets. By recording a video in Cinema mode and activating the LUT function from the top menu **, the HONOR Magic4 Pro AI will recognize the most suitable color correction for the scene, choosing from: Classic, Sun, Focus, Bravura, Glow, Pure, Nostalgia, Dark.

My tests

After some home tests to study the shooting menus, I decided to experience the thrill of shooting in 4K at 60fps: in the end there is a first time for everything!

Opening the camera, I selected Video and set the Video Resolution [21: 9] 4K and 60fps frame rate through the Settings menu; no filters or presets and zero beauty filter. The occasion was a trek in one of the oldest forests in Italy, in Vallombrosa, between Florence and Arezzo. I shot short clips of a few seconds *** which I then edited in two different modes.

After selecting the clips of interest, I inserted the transitions, I didn't apply filters, removed the recorded audio and inserted a music track; automatic export of the final video. The result is the following:

Conclusions

You have to familiarize yourself with all the professional tools that we have available on HONOR Magic4 Pro. The videos seem to me of excellent quality, both the single clips and the final elaborate (better the one edited with InShot).

The OIS works to attenuate the normal and involuntary hand oscillations during the shooting phase, even if sometimes the movement is not very fluid and a bit jerky. Flawless focus points, with specific and selective focus tracking on the face if recognized during shooting.

The stock video editor for the editing of the clips performs a resizing to ** for the short side: I don't know cinema and I don't know if it is a deliberate choice to have a more usable file.

I would have expected to be able to edit the videos recorded in LOG in 4K 60fps with the LUTs: software or hardware limitation?

Power and potential are many, in my opinion with some software upgrade you can go to fill those insignificant gaps highlighted above, obtaining a smartphone for truly cinematic shooting.
