Portrait photography
Honor 9A does not have dedicated portrait mode on the device like other upper-tier Honor devices. however, Honor 9A comes with two fabulous features that can substitute the Portrait mode of other devices. Honor 9A can use these two features to capture portrait pictures.

· Beauty mode.
· Aperture mode.
Beauty Mode
Beauty Mode: beauty mode makes skins smoother and clearer by eliminating black spots any dark marks and wrinkles it also brighten the face. Most of the time normal camera mode (photo Mode) would highlight any marks or shades on face. The lack of AI mode means it is better to take pictures involving faces in Beauty mode. There are measurable levels of 0 to 10. Where 0 won’t have any effect and 10 will have an extreme effect. I find beauty level 4 or 5 is a suitable level for beauty effects.
F 4 and F16

Aperture Mode:
In terms of mobile phone photography, there is no physical control on aperture so above mention effects are all AI-generated effects. Therefore it might not be so real or effect as physical aperture control. Honor 9A comes with a dedicated depth sensor camera that is useful to create nice blur at the background.
In Honor 9A you can choose Apeture mode to take nice blur background of the subject. However it is very important to find suitable F-number (F stop). Higher F number will reduce blur at Background as it will have more area on focus. Where lower F number will have shallow depth of fields that means more blurred background. More importantly lower the number will should have less area on focus. As it was AI based enhancement, therefore, it sometimes produces an unreal focus effect. It all depends on a number of factors such as size of subject, distance from the subject and light condition.
For portrait picture, any aperture between F4 to F7.1 will produce nice blured background with person in the focus.
Aperture mode in terms of DSLR or other form of lenses refers to opening and closing of aperture of the lens. Aperture determines the amount of light passes through lenses to the sensor. So the wider the aperture (lower number) more light passes through lens.
Two things to understand
1. Wide aperture (lower F number) means shallow depth of fields and less area in focus. A result is nice bokeh effect.
2. Narrow aperture (higher F number) means has wider depth of fields and more area in focus. In result has less bokeh effect.

Having these two features is good assets to Honor 9A, however, it can be better in my opinion. The major drawback of Honor 9A compare to other Honor devices such as Honor 9X pro is lack of synchronized version of aperture mode and beauty mode. It really limits potential of portrait photography on Honor 9A compared with Honor 9X pro and so on. For example Honor 9x Pro comes with dedicated portrait mode where there is option for beauty feature of Beauty mode. I wish Honor will synchronize these two features in future updates.
