Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) technology, also known as active noise control/reduction, works by identifying unwanted sound waves and creating precisely inverted signals to neutralise the original sound, thereby reducing distracting background noise to the greatest possible extent.

Due to this intricate process, active noise-cancelling headphones, by nature, must feature a more complex design. They usually incorporate a meticulously-tailored noise-reduction module that collects ambient noise from a dedicated microphone, processes it via internal circuits, replicates the sound waves in the opposite phase, and adds them to the original headphone output. As a result, noise and the generated sound cancel each other out, and music comes out as it was meant to be heard, crisp and pure down to its roots.

ANC headphones can be classified into three types: feedforward, feedback, and hybrid active noise cancellation.
In a feedforward design, the microphone is placed outside the ear cup (i.e. far from the speaker), so as to ensure that the mic picks up the noise before the listener does and that more time is given for the generation of anti-phase waves.
With a feedback setup, the mic is located inside the ear cup, that is, closer to the speaker, and therefore receives the signal in the exact same manner as the listener does. However, there's an ever-present risk that speaker output can interfere with mic reception, so further fine-tuning of the corresponding algorithm is needed, presenting more challenges for an optimal listening experience.

Therefore, most of the high-end headphones have adopted hybrid active noise cancellation. By leveraging the advantages of both feedforward and feedback designs, such models are able to achieve sensitive and accurate noise capture, while suppressing noise across a broader range of frequencies.
As you'd expect, the intricate design and cutting-edge technology packed into ANC headphones result in pricier products, usually in excess of $150 USD per pair. However, with the additional sound incorporated into the speaker output to counteract the presence of noise, audio quality could also be slightly degraded. Details can be lost, and most crucially for music, the sound output might differ subtly from that in the recording itself.
Many of these issues have already been accounted for, though, in the flourishing field of acoustic technology, and ANC headphones have proved their suitability and versatility in daily life, for every manner of listener and environment. So while further improvements are needed, for the time being, ANC headphones provide for the clearest, most intimate listening experience available – music for the soul in a cacophonous world!
