What’s good Honorians? Please stay at home and stay safe. In the meantime, spend a little time reading this article and watch the video if you’re interested into getting a smartwatch as your daily gadget companion. Let’s check out if the new Honor Magic Watch 2 is worth the upgrade from its parent company first gen Huawei Watch GT. You might ask why I use Watch GT as comparison instead of Watch Magic 1? That’s because Honor specs sheet is more identical to Watch GT 2 than its own predecessor. And also it’s the only watch I have hehe.

Physical appearances
By now, you might have already familiar with both size dimensions at 46mm. Watch GT is a tiny bit heftier and thicker than Magic Watch 2. Despite that, I think Watch GT offer a little more protection to its screen as it is beneath the edge top layer of the watch. Whereas Magic Watch 2 entire screen covered to top part and curved downward to the side. Even so, my personal preference would still go for the latter as the newer design makes the watch more ergonomics and comfortable to wear for longer hours. Honor watch also equip with microphone for phone calls and speakers. Apart from different colours and straps I showed here, everything else on both watches appears to be very similar.

Phone App Interface
Since both shared the same UI from Huawei health app, you can expect both interfaces display almost identical menus to each other. Except Magic Watch 2 have few more features such as automatic stress test, music storage, and favourite contacts. There are much more choice for the watch faces on Watch Magic 2 compare to Watch GT.

Battery Life
Both watches are said to last up to 14 days on paper. As much as it’s true, that’s if you use it as literally a watch only. I tested both by leaving it overnight on all settings turned on with Bluetooth connection. On the next morning when I check Watch GT dropped 2% whereas Watch Magic 2 dropped 3%. Not much of a significant difference and that’s probably due to Watch GT doesn’t have as much features as Honor does.
Workout menus
Watch GT offers 5 type of running courses while Magic Watch 2 have 13 different running courses. There are quite a few more different sports and exercises added on for Honor and for this I would say Magic Watch 2 is more sports oriented.

Smartwatch Interface
As much as layout goes, both watches once again spotted with rather similar features other than the add-ons for Honor. Both running Huawei own customized LiteOS. Despite the OS can be a bit too light for some people, I’d say it features all the essential needs for a smartwatch especially for Honor. The rest just goes down to personal choice. Myself is thrilled with the music storage and able to make phone calls. Gotta have that ‘this is agent 007 speaking’ feels once in a while aye.
Here’s the list of advantages and shortcomings of Watch Magic 2 over Watch GT in my opinion
Advantages
- More additional features without compromising anything from first gen
- Lighter, comfortable and more elegant
- More workout choices
- Plenty of watch faces (over 150)
Shortcomings
- Lesser battery juice although only minimal different
- Lack of protection on the top surface of the screen
In conclusion, is it worth the upgrade? Definitely yes at the price retailing at RM699. If you’re lucky you might be able to get better deal with some retailers. Magic Watch 2 is more superior in almost every way if you could look pass its couple of shortcomings.
