Disclaimer: I’m not a doctor so I’ll be backing what I wrote in this article by referring to qualified professional and the WHO. HONOR claims1 the Honor Band 5 isn't designed to be a medical device so do seek a proper and qualified second opinion if your blood oxygen level is really low

On 1st March 2020, the WHO (World Health Organization) came out with a situational report2 on the COVID-19 which detailed that "all countries should work to optimize the availability of pulse oximeters..." to better detect oxygenation problem among possible patients

That's because one of the main symptom of the COVID-19 is shortness of breath3; per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). A pulse oximeter can detect blood oxygen level and here's where a new prominent feature of the Honor Band 5 comes into play

An update4 for the Honor Band 5 was pushed at the end of September 2019 bringing new features like pulse oxygen saturation monitoring (& remote music control being the other) which means that you basically have an oximeter sitting on your wrist if you already owned one

If the SpO2 function is missing from your (newly bought) Honor Band 5, update your Band with the latest firmware by going into the "Huawei Health" app, click on the "Devices" tab, enter into your connected Band, click on "Firmware update" and update your Band

For what reading to lookout for, we'll be using the video5 by Dr. John Campbell6, a retired UK doctor, as reference where target saturations between 94-98% for most people and individuals with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) between 88-92% as acceptable

While more expensive than a dedicated oximeter (the Honor Band 5 currently retails for RM129)7, it can do a plethora of things such as sleep monitoring, continuous heart rate tracking but most importantly it comes with a 1-year warranty and readily available for purchase
With the Movement Control Order8 implemented by the government to prevent the spread of the Coronavirus lasting from the 18-31 Mar 2020, let's all HONOR-ians work together to stop the spread by practicing social distancing and by staying put at home. We can do it!
