The dual-lens rear camera features a 20MP lens paired with a 2MP depth-sensing lens, and the AI is an option that can be activated with a special AI button. The effectiveness depends on the situation. In worst cases, the colors got so amped up the scene becomes completely detached from reality. The best cases are ones where it balances out an HDR-style glow with subtly enhanced colors.
The bokeh mode is very good. It can accurately capture edges and blur out the background around them.
There are many other features to play with, ranging from slow-mo video, 3D portrait mode, and the addition of a night shot mode with Huawei's image stabilization powered by AI. In our brief tests, this isn't as effective as Huawei P20 Pro, where we first saw the feature. It opens the shutter for about four seconds and doesn't require a tripod. Instead, it uses AI to stabilize the shot. This is worth experimenting with, provided that you take a photo in normal mode as well because sometimes the Night mode shot can be very noisy.
When HONOR 8X gets a photo right, I'd be lying if I said I didn't doubt for a second the shot came from a phone that costs so little. However, you shouldn't expect it to be consistent. This is true of the bokeh mode, as well as when taking photos in generally good lighting. It's of course one of the main reasons to own HONOR 8X.
Selfies are taken with a 16MP lens located in the notch above the screen.
You will find a fingerprint sensor on the back of the phone. It is mounted quite high on the phone body, which may force a grip adjustment to reach it. There are a MicroSD card slot, a 3750mAh battery, dual-SIM, a fast face unlock feature for convenience, 4GB of RAM and the Kirin 710 processor. Huawei's GPU Turbo game tweaks are also available. Huawei's EMUI 8.2 user interface is on top of Android 8.1 operating system.
As with any smartphones, there are downsides. In addition to the occasional camera missteps, we're disappointed to see a Micro-USB charging port rather than a USB Type-C on HONOR 8X. It's plausible there are economic reasons behind HONOR's decision to use Micro-USB, but we'd rather the newer port was adopted. NFC is also not a guaranteed feature in every market HONOR 8X enters, so Google Pay won't always be available.
