Why Is My Phone Not Ringing? Causes and Fixes

    Table of Contents

Why Is My Phone Not Ringing? A Quick Guide

Why is my phone not ringing? The usual causes are low ringer volume, silent mode, Do Not Disturb, Bluetooth routing or blocked numbers.

Raise the ringer—not media—volume, check for a silent or vibrate icon and temporarily turn off Bluetooth.

“Phone does not ring” and “Phone not ringing” may affect all or selected callers. Test several numbers to separate general settings from contact-specific filtering.

Incoming calls may be silent because the ringtone is muted, the speaker is blocked, audio is routed elsewhere or a schedule suppresses alerts.

    Try these common checks:

    ● Increase the ringtone volume in Sound and vibration settings.

    ● Select a ringtone and make sure it is not set to “None”.

    ● Turn off silent mode, Focus and Do Not Disturb.

    ● Disconnect Bluetooth headphones, watches and vehicle systems.

    ● Remove any case or dirt covering the phone’s speaker.

    ● Restart the phone to clear a temporary software glitch.

Play music or a video. If that is also silent, the speaker may be faulty.

A phone may stop ringing after an update, accidental setting change or connection to a paired Bluetooth device.

Check for silent, vibrate, Focus or Do Not Disturb. If the buttons control media, raise the ringtone in the full volume panel.

If “My phone is not ringing” describes a sudden change, consider a new case, connected earbuds, an update or a call-filtering app.

How to fix a phone that is not ringing: follow the checks below and test after each one.

    Use this simple troubleshooting order:

    1. Press a volume button and raise the ringtone volume to a comfortable level.

    2. Turn off silent mode, vibrate mode, Focus and Do Not Disturb.

    3. Switch Bluetooth off and ask someone to call you.

    4. Check that incoming calls are not being diverted or blocked.

    5. Restart the phone completely.

    6. Install any available software update.

    7. Test the speaker with music or an alarm.

If calls and other audio remain silent, contact a qualified repair service or the manufacturer’s support team.

Open the sound settings, select a ringtone and raise its volume. Menu names vary by device.

In sound and vibration settings, raise the ring volume and choose a ringtone. Volume buttons work only if configured for the ringer.

Make sure any physical sound switch is not set to silent. Also review the sound action assigned to configurable side buttons.

For a replacement device, compare speaker quality, battery life and software support.

Silent mode may mute the ringtone even though incoming calls still appear on screen or trigger vibration.

Turn off any crossed-out bell or speaker icon, then recheck the ringtone volume.

Calls and media may have separate controls, so raise the call ringer specifically.

Do Not Disturb can silence calls unless selected contacts or repeat callers are allowed. Focus modes work similarly.

Disable Do Not Disturb or Focus, or review its schedule and caller exceptions.

Driving, bedtime and meeting modes may activate through schedules, events, locations or car connections.

The issue described as “Why won’t my phone ring” is often caused by vibrate mode, the selected ringtone or low ringer volume. If the phone vibrates, the call is reaching the device, but the sound settings may need adjustment.

Switch from vibrate to ring and choose a built-in ringtone; a missing or incompatible custom file may remain silent.

If other audio is quiet, clean the speaker gently with a dry, soft brush. Avoid liquids, sharp objects and close-range compressed air.

Some contacts may have silent custom ringtones, be blocked or be affected by unknown-caller screening.

Check the affected contact and review blocked-number, unknown-caller and spam-screening settings.

Save the caller’s number and test again. If unfamiliar numbers remain silent, review blocking, spam protection and unknown-caller settings. A newer smartphone may also offer more capable call-screening tools.

Calls may not appear if Phone app notifications or full-screen alerts are disabled. Software or display faults can also hide the call screen.

In the Phone app’s notification settings, allow incoming-call alerts, banners and sounds.

If calls appear only after hang-up, restart, install updates and remove recently added call-management apps. Check Focus and call forwarding too.

If calls never arrive, check coverage, airplane mode, the SIM or eSIM, forwarding and account restrictions.

Check the signal, change location, briefly toggle airplane mode and restart to reconnect.

If callers reach voicemail, review forwarding and blocked numbers. Test the SIM elsewhere and contact your provider if it still fails.

This usually means the outgoing ringback tone is missing. For “Why can’t I hear a ringback tone when calling someone?”, check call volume, Bluetooth and signal.

Check for Calling, Connecting or a timer. If connected audio is silent, raise call volume and disconnect Bluetooth; if the call ends, try another number.

“Why can’t I hear ringing when I call someone?” and “No ringing sound when I call someone” describe a ringback issue, not the ringtone. Disable Wi-Fi Calling temporarily and contact your provider if every call fails.
