I originally purchased my Honor 7s because it had a desirable specification at a reasonable price. One of the specifications that swayed it for me was the 16GB of internal storage...plenty of room or so I thought for the very few apps I wish to install.
Since the early days I have experienced warnings and had to constantly clean the memory to keep the phone running. I can't remember if the fault existed from the day of purchase, after a factory reset or at a random point in time, but I know it happened early in my ownership of the device. I just accepted that Android and its apps must be extremely bloated and occupying vast amounts of storage compared to the same apps I had on my 8GB MotoG (original version).
Having factory reset for the umpteenth time and about to reinstall everything I remembered I had my father's 16GB STK handset in a draw. Instead of continuing with the Honor 7S resurrection I thought I'd try the STK. Now I understand that there are inaccessible portions of each handset's memory and these may differ in size, but after reset both showed about 6GB being used. After only allowing the installed Google services to perform their updates the memory usage on the Honor was significantly higher, showing more than 10GB now being used. After uninstalling or disabling all of the unwanted bundled software on the Honor and installing the apps that I do use, Facebook, Messenger, a mail client, smart device client and Google Calendar I am down to around 2GB free. The same apps dutifully installed on the STK leave over 9GB free.
I have come to several possible conclusions:
- The device only has 8GB of memory but reports it as 16GB (surely not)
- The device has memory in 2 8GB banks, one of which has gone bad but allows the handset to continue to work.
- Doing a factory reset corrupted the configuration settings of the phone and so only 8GB is now recognised.
I could be wrong, but suspecting that only half the memory is available roughly ties in with the storage comparisons between the two handsets. I really hope someone out there has experienced this problem and can provide a solution since I really like the handset.
Thanks in advance for any advice other than “Factory Reset” and “Clean Storage” as these options have already been exhausted. And no, “32GB is the new minimum you need” is not a valid response when I know I can have 9GB of free space on a 16GB device with all the apps I need installed…it’s a phone not a gaming rig, lol.
