Exhibition by Artist Sei Smith included a discussion by Honor on the use of technology to achieve minimalist design aesthetics
New York, September 26, 2018 – Honor, a leading smartphone e-brand, today hosted a preview exhibition at the Studio 525 with artwork by Sei Smith, as part of an introduction for Honor 8X -- the latest smartphone by Honor to embrace minimalist design concepts. The event included discussion by Sei Smith on the installations created through his collaboration with Honor. Alumnus of the School of Art Institute of Chicago and Co-founder of art gallery Apostrophe NYC, Smith has notably staged shows in the stairwell of the Whitney and the courtyard at MoMa PS1.
Christopher Panton, a representative from Honor, also explained how art inspires his company’s smartphone designs and highlighted the 8X’s use of the latest in chip-on-film (COF) technology. From an artistic point of view, the evening served as a preview of the new smartphone -- a device which features stunning visual attributes such as a 6.5-inch FullView display with 91% screen-to-body ratio, a 4.25mm thin bottom border, and a 2.5D double texture aurora glass body with a grating effect. Honor 8X strikes a balance between functionality and beauty and is available in three vivid colors: blue, red and black.
Working with young artists, Honor demonstrates the brand’s daring attitude and design hallmarks which it brings to its products through its exceptional technologies, striking minimalist design and sophisticated craftsmanship.
A series of product stories highlighted the relationship between the art installations and smartphone features:
Reflection – “These pieces were built to be immersive. They are meant to be experienced, not just observed. A broader display will allow you to do just this: step into a new world through your phone, instead of just observing through it.” Sei Smith
Chicago Experiments – “We need ample energy and battery life to keep up with our experimental nature. Honor is keenly aware of the battery demands that fuel our voracious appetite to stay connected. They understand that a better battery can allow you to have the maximum freedom to do more.” Sei Smith
Mixed Reflection – “We live in a world that is increasingly visual. My ask of you as an artist is to capture the unexpected; to ignite emotion and reaction, to surprise and bewilder your friends and your community. You’ll be hearing more about Honor’s newest device and how they have engineered a better, higher quality camera. They will put in your hands the tools to take breathtaking photos everywhere, anywhere. Challenge yourself with these tools, this device that will be at your fingertips.” Sei Smith
With young adventurous fans in mind, Honor also aims to make it possible for them to take the highest quality photos. Honor 8X comes with a flagship-quality 20-megapixel dual-lens camera and F1.8 large aperture, and utilizes AI smart scenario recognition and other features which allow anyone to take professional-level pictures. The camera’s enhanced capabilities include industry-leading AIS intelligent anti-shaking technology, a night shooting mode that allows you to take perfect night shots under a maximum 6-second exposure, and AI sports shot.
Speaking to how his art installations mirror the technology and direction of Honor, Smith said: “We are living in a time when art and technology are colliding. Our screens have become our second hand, our second brain, our second eyes and our second heart. We see so much of our lives through the lens of our phones. When Honor told me that the one thing they want people to know is that their phones are meant to empower a new point of view, I knew that while we create vastly different things, we speak the same language.”
As the representative of Honor, Panton added: “The analogy Sei draws between art and technology is very interesting and inspirational. Today’s exhibition is a reminder of why it so important for us to continue to experiment and innovate, to come up with new ideas and to unlock new methods, new applications and new technologies. Honor has kept these ideas and concepts in mind when designing the new Honor 8X – a phone that underscores our commitment to elegant minimalist design in tandem with technological innovation.”
