Getting a new phone should feel exciting. But then comes the practical bit—working out how to transfer text messages from one phone to another without losing anything important.
Your messages often hold more than you expect. Old chats, work details, login codes. They all add up. The good news is that moving them across isn’t as tricky as it seems. There are a few simple ways to do it, and most only take a few minutes. This guide walks you through the options so you can pick what works best for you.
If you want the simplest option on how to transfer text messages to a new phone, start with Google Backup. It’s built into Android and works across most brands, so you don’t need to install anything extra.
How it works: Your texts (SMS and MMS) are saved to your Google account. When you set up your new phone, you restore that backup.
Steps to follow:
1. On your old phone, go to Settings.
2. Tap Google > Backup.
3. Make sure Backup by Google One is turned on and “SMS & MMS messages” is enabled.
4.Tap Back up now and wait for it to finish.
Now switch to your new phone:
5. Turn it on and start the setup process.
6. Sign in with the same Google account.
7. When prompted, choose Restore from backup.
8. Select your most recent backup.
Once the setup finishes, your messages should appear. Some may take a bit longer to sync, so it’s worth staying on Wi-Fi for a while.
When to use this method:
● You’re setting up a new phone from scratch
● You want a clean, all-in-one transfer (apps, contacts, messages)
If you’re wondering, “How can you transfer text messages to a new phone?” most Android phones now come with built-in tools that let you copy data directly from one device to another. You’ll usually see this option during setup.
How it works: You connect both phones (wirelessly or with a USB cable), and the tool copies your data across.
For example, if you’re moving to an HONOR smartphone, you can use its built-in Device Clone feature. It’s very straightforward. The two phones connect directly—usually by scanning a QR code—and then you choose exactly what you want to move, including your text messages.
Steps to follow:
1. On your new HONOR phone, go to Settings > System & updates > Device Clone.
2. Tap “This is the new device” and choose your old phone type (HONOR, other Android, or iOS).
3. On your old phone, open the Device Clone app (or install it if needed).
4. Tap “This is the old device”.
5. Scan the QR code shown on your new phone to connect the two.
6. On your old device, select the data you want to transfer, including messages.
7. Start the transfer and wait for it to complete.
Because the connection is created directly between the two phones, the process is usually fast and secure. It can transfer not just messages, but also contacts, photos, apps, and more in one go.
Things to keep in mind:
● Both phones need enough battery
● The process can take time if you have a lot of data
A smooth data transfer makes changing phones much less disruptive, especially when your messages, contacts and other essentials are ready to use from the start. It is also a good opportunity to choose a device that better suits how you communicate, multitask and use your phone throughout the day.

If the built-in options don’t work for you, an SMS backup app like SMS Backup & Restore is a solid fallback. It gives you more control, especially if you only want to move messages.
How it works:
SMS Backup & Restore focuses just on messages (and call logs), which keeps things simple. It can:
● Save SMS and MMS messages as a backup file (XML format)
● Store backups locally or upload them to Google Drive, Dropbox, or OneDrive
● Let you choose specific conversations instead of everything
● Transfer messages directly between phones over Wi-Fi
Here’s how to transfer phone messages to another phone directly using SMS Backup & Restore:
1. Install SMS Backup & Restore on both phones.
2. Connect both devices to the same Wi-Fi network.
3. Open the app on both phones.
4. On the old phone, tap Transfer > Send from this phone.
5. On the new phone, tap Receive on this phone.
6. Pair the devices (usually via a code or QR-style prompt).
7. Choose Messages and start the transfer.
Keep both screens on until it finishes. The process is usually quick, even for larger message histories.
Here’s how to transfer texts to another phone using the classic backup-and-restore method via SMS Backup & Restore:
On your old phone:
1. Open the app and tap Set up a backup.
2. Select Messages.
3. Pick where to save the backup (local storage or cloud).
4. Run the backup and wait for it to finish.
On your new phone:
1. Install the SMS Backup & Restore app.
2. Open it and locate your backup file (from storage or cloud).
3. Tap Restore and select the backup.
4. Follow the prompts to import your messages.
During this process, Android may ask you to set the app as your default SMS app temporarily. That’s normal—you can switch back once the restore is done.
When to use it:
● You missed the transfer step during setup
● You only want to move messages, not everything else
● You want a separate backup you can keep or reuse later
Even when you follow the steps carefully, things don’t always go perfectly. Messages might be missing, transfers can fail halfway, or nothing seems to happen at all.
Most of these issues are common and fixable. Here are the ones you’re most likely to run into, and what you can do about them.
This is probably the most common problem. You complete the setup, but your texts are nowhere to be found.
Why it happens:
● Messages weren’t included in the backup
● You skipped the restore step during setup
● The transfer tool didn’t select messages by default
How to fix it:
● Check your backup settings and make sure SMS is included
● Run the transfer again and manually select messages only
● If needed, use an SMS backup app as a fallback
If you still have your old phone, you’re in a good position. You can simply try again without losing anything.
This happens more often than you’d expect. If your new phone is signed into a different account, your backup won’t show up.
How to fix it:
● Go to Settings > Accounts and check your Google account
● Sign in with the same account used on your old phone
● Re-run the restore process
Sometimes the process just… stops. This is usually down to connection or device issues.
Common causes:
● Low battery
● Interruptions during transfer
How to fix it:
● Keep both phones charged and unlocked
● Stay connected to a stable Wi-Fi network, or switch to a cable
● Restart both devices and try again
Figuring out how to transfer text messages from one phone to another doesn’t have to be complicated. Whether you use Google Backup, a direct phone-to-phone tool, a USB cable, or an app, the right method depends on your setup and timing.
If you’re starting fresh, built-in options are usually the easiest. If not, there’s always a reliable workaround. Pick the approach that fits your situation, follow the steps carefully, and your messages should move across without much trouble.
Moving your chats is simplest using your Google account. On your old device, head to Settings, tap Google, and select Backup to ensure your messages are saved to the cloud. When you sign into your new Android phone, choose to restore this data during the setup. Many brands also provide built-in tools, like HONOR Device Clone, which can transfer your entire history wirelessly in just a few minutes.
Yes, you can export your messages, though Android does not have a built-in “export” button in the standard settings. The most effective method is using a trusted third-party app like SMS Backup & Restore. This allows you to save your conversations as a file that you can email to yourself or store on Google Drive. It is a great way to keep a permanent, readable record of your important chats for future reference.
Messages often fail to appear because the backup on your old device was not fully updated before you switched. Ensure both phones are signed into the same Google account and connected to a strong Wi-Fi signal. It is also worth checking if your old phone had RCS “Chat features” enabled, as these can sometimes take a little longer to sync. Simply give the new phone a moment to finish downloading your data.
You can manually forward any message by long pressing the text and choosing the forward icon. For automatic forwarding, you will typically need a specialised app from the Play Store, as this is not a standard Android feature. Just keep in mind that forwarded texts are treated as new outgoing messages. They will use your monthly plan’s allowance or be charged at standard rates by your mobile network provider.
There are several great tools available for this task. SMS Backup & Restore is a brilliant universal option that works between any two Android devices. Most manufacturers also offer their own apps, such as HONOR Device Clone, which are often the fastest choice. These apps create a direct link between your devices to move texts, contacts, and photos securely without needing to use the cloud.
